Refrain from heading out to the trail without having your feet properly fitted for your hiking shoes. You may choose to go to a specialty shoe store or an athletic apparel store to have your feet assessed. This doesn’t mean that you must purchase your hiking shoes there, but you can get a good idea of the type of shoe you need. Take your hiking backpack with you, so you can see how comfortable the shoes are with weight on your back. If you have low arches you will need shoes that arch up or have insoles with high arches. If you have very wide feet you must make sure your shoes are wide enough to provide comfort and prevent rubbing against the side of your feet.
